15th August 2019 is National Relaxation Day, a perfect excuse to sit back, unwind and relax after a busy day of shifts. Whether you’re treating yourself to an evening pamper session or just grabbing some time for yourself in between shifts, here’s how you can feel a little more laid back today!

1. Spend time with plants!

Plants are really effective at increasing oxygen and clearing out toxins, which is why spending time in nature improves your overall wellbeing! Whether it’s walking around a park or adding a house plant to your desk, being around plants can lift your mood!

Did you know? – Studies have shown patients in hospital rooms with plants report lower stress. Even just stepping into a lush space can reduce your heart rate. Plus, plants are effective at increasing oxygen and clearing out toxins, which should help you breathe easier—literally.


2. Eat a piece of fruit

Specifically an orange or banana! It’s so simple, but eating some valuable potassium helps your body regulate blood pressure. Keeping this under control will help you bounce back from stress. Plus, eating citrus, which is packed with Vitamin C, can help to alleviate both physical and psychological effect of stress! Why not add a piece of fruit to your lunch or treat yourself to some delicious banana pancakes for dessert tonight?

3. Listen to some classical music

Listening to any music can help you to feel better – classical music in particular has been proven to slow your heart rate, lower blood pressure and even decrease levels of stress hormones.

4. Chew gum!

Believe or not, the simple act of chewing gum has been proven to lower cortisol and improve reported mood. Zero effort required!

5. Have a giggle!

It sounds crazy, but watching a funny video online does more than just brighten your coffee break, it actually helps to relax you by increasing the endorphins released by your brain. Those cat video suddenly seem much more scientific!

6. Grab some chocolate

It’s not just an urban myth – studies show that even just 40 grams of dark chocolate a day can help you de-stress. The perfect excuse to head to the vending machine – you’re welcome!

7. Take a mental holiday

If you’re feeling a little stressed or overwhelmed, a moment of daydreaming can genuinely help! Studies show that just a few minutes of disengaging from your stressors rejuvenates your ability to tackle the work – so take a moment to close your eyes and imagine yourself lying on a beach!
