Schools and childcare

All children in the UK between the ages of 5 and 16 are entitled to a free place at a state school. Schools are broken down into primary schools (5-11 year olds), and secondary schools (11-16 year olds). Free education is also available for 16-19 year old, either at secondary schools or sixth form colleges. For younger children, nursery school is available for 3-4 year olds, and many hospitals offer crèches for staff with younger children.

How to apply for a school place

You can apply for both primary and secondary school places for your children online or by using your council’s application form: http://www.gov.uk/schools-admissions/applying

To find out about the admission criteria used by schools, visit

Deadlines to apply

You must apply for a primary school place by 15 January. You must apply for a secondary school place by 31 October. The school year runs from early September to late July. If you are moving in the middle of an academic year, it is possible to apply for a place mid-year. The way to do this varies from council to council. It is best to visit your council’s website for more information, or contact your HCL consultant.
