As well as acknowledging world mental health day, this week is also baby loss awareness week.
Greg Western, head of HCL Mental Health, has shared his experiences dealing with anxiety and his own mental health struggle, following the loss of his son 2 years ago at 32 weeks.
“Sadly, nearly two years ago, our son was stillborn at 32 weeks, and of course this had an impact on my mental wellbeing and mental health. Through his very sad loss, I sought out trauma therapy, which also led to me learning and dealing with anxiety that I had suffered with for years.
The therapy was fantastic, I ‘m now equipped with some brilliant tools like practicing mindfulness and meditation to help me when life gets a little bit stressful or I just feel anxious.
The way we talk about mental health has come a long way over the last few years, however there is still a stigma around it. You certainly don’t hide the fact if you have the flu, it shouldn’t be any different with mental health.
I do believe the perception of mental health is going in the right direction, and I’m sure things will only improve over the coming years. Only a few weeks ago I was on a stag do, and it was very freeing to hear men openly talk about their mental health experience – what a difference to ten years ago!”
