Today we celebrate National Care Day, a day to celebrate the rights of care experienced children, young people in care and acknowledging those that work within the profession.
The theme this year is ‘Reimagining’, which is encouraging people to share ideas on how to improve the care system and the lives of young carers today, so they can achieve their own goals and have the same chances as others their age.
It is estimated that there are around 800,000 young carers in the UK aged 5-17, with up to 27% of those forced to miss school regularly due to their responsibilities.
It’s people like our social workers that can really make a difference to young people’s lives, working to ensure they have the right support and guidance to succeed when caring for others, or leaving care themselves. They work with young people who are making the transition into adulthood. Their work includes supporting the young person to live independently and to receive education, training or employment.
We would love to see if you are showing your support for this great cause today! Why not snap a selfie with #CareDay20 on your palm and share how you would imagine the care system.
