If you recently landed a job interview, although in-person interviews aren’t quite a thing of the past there’s a big chance that it won’t be in person. Interviews are one of the many things that companies are now conducting virtually and are quickly becoming the new norm. There is every chance your next interview will be a video interview, taking place on a platform such as Zoom or Skype.

With this rise comes the need to iron out the right protocol surrounding a video interview, which is different from face-to-face and phone interviews. Our experienced team has put together these five top tips to help our candidates to better prepare for video interviews.

 

Presentation 

Your presentation in a video call is very important. The interviewer may only be able to see your top half, but dressing professionally helps you act in a professional frame of mind. Equally, be aware of the surroundings in which you choose to set up your video call. Make sure the area behind you is not messy or cluttered and there aren’t any inappropriate posters on the wall as this does not reflect well on you. A blank clean wall as a background is best. Try to find a private, quiet area where you can shut the door and seclude yourself from others. This helps avoid disruptions and distractions during the interview.

Body language

Just like a face-to-face interview, your body language during video interviews is very important. Ensure you sit up straight and roll your shoulders back. You should also make sure to look at the camera instead of the screen as this is the only way to establish eye contact with the interviewer. Less body language can be transmitted via video, so it is important to compensate for this by paying attention to the tone of your voice. If you are trying to convince an employer you are passionate, make sure it translates through your tone of voice as well as your words. Last but not least, remember to smile.

Make allowances for technology 

Technology can always be liable to a glitch. Try to minimise any potential issues by doing a test call to a friend before you start. Sign in early to avoid any last minute problems that could make you late or flustered. If the technology does go wrong, do not hesitate tell your interviewer that the connection is not functioning properly. Most importantly in this scenario, do not panic or stress out. If something goes wrong with the technology think of it as the perfect opportunity to show that you can be calm and pragmatic when faced with a problem.

Stay present

It is important to stay attentive while your interviewer is talking and make it clear that you are listening. This is even truer in the case of a video call where they can be less aware of your actions. Reassure them you are paying attention by making listening sounds such as ‘hmm’ and ‘yes’. In order to help you pay attention, make sure you have closed all other programmes on your computer to avoid being distracted by emails or social media notifications.

Prepare.

As with a face-to-face interview, it goes without saying that you must prepare properly for the interview. Make sure you know your own CV well, have thoroughly read the job description and have an idea of what you want to talk about.
