Some of the team from HCL Permanent recently attended the inaugural OET candidate preparation day, in London’s Student Central. This first of it’s kind event aims to inform and prepare candidates in gaining the skills they will need for OET.
This was the first time that the event has been held, with more events planned internationally in India, Phillipines and Australia.
What is the OET?
The OET (Occupational English Test) is a healthcare-specific English language test. It covers the four language skills of writing, speaking, reading and listening, and helps develop language skills for success in healthcare courses, clinical placement, registration, visas and work.

It is an exam, proofing you have the right level of English and widely used for registration, study and work in the healthcare sector.
- 2. What is the format of the exam?
It assesses of all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking – with an emphasis on communication in healthcare professional settings.

1 November 2017
- 4. How do I take OET?
There are various OET test venues – universities, English language schools and exam centres. There are test dates every month – however, registration is only open for the next two test dates at a time. Find out more about dates and venues on the OET website.
- 5. How are OET results issued?
You can see an overview of your latest test grades via your online profile on the OET website, approximately 16 business days after each test day. Official, hard copy Statements of Results are mailed within ten business days of the publication of results in online profiles.The Statement of Results shows the scores obtained at the most recent sitting, as well as scores for all sittings within the last two years. Results for the four sub-tests that make up the OET are reported as one of five grades – A (highest) to E (lowest).
- 6. What grade do I need to achieve with OET in order to work in the UK as a nurse?
You will need a minimum of an OET Grade B in all four sub-tests- listening, reading, writing and speaking.
- 7. What do I do if I’m already preparing for the IELTS test instead?
It is your choice whether to take IELTS or OET as a proof of English language proficiency to gain your NMC registration.
- 8. How long are OET results valid for?
The length of time the results are recognised as valid is decided by the authorities that recognise OET (e.g. the NMC).
